SUMMARY:Thirlestane Castle\, Lauder\, Berwickshire
DESCRIPTION:The Sealed Knot bring do you an insight into Scotlands part in the ‘Wars of the Three Kingdoms’\, when father fought son\, brother fought brother and the entire nation was in turmoil. \nWhile the war began as a conflict between King Charles I and his Parliament\, it quickly spilled into the remaining kingdoms of Scotland and Ireland. Initially a Covenanter\, James Graham\, Marquis of Montrose subsequently became the Lieutenant General in Scotland for the King in 1644. \nMontrose raised his army amongst the Highland clans\, a feat that would have seemed almost impossible to many at the time. The clans had never been known to come together and fight for a unified cause but Montrose played on their hatred of the Campbells who fought for Parliament\, to rally his troops. \nMontrose became a formiable force in Scotland.  Let the members of the Seald Knot show you the life and times of the period in the Living History Camp and perhaps a skirmish may erupt within the beautiful settings of the Castle Grounds.

SUMMARY:Hull 375
DESCRIPTION:Details: On 23 April 375 years ago\, the governor of Hull\, Sir John Hotham\, refused to allow King Charles to enter the city and access the weapons stored in its walls. This small act of defiance heralded ten years of brutal civil war between the supports of the King and those of the English Parliament. \nThe Sealed Knot and The Earl of Manchester’s Regiment of Foote would like to invite you to bring the family and step back to this pivotal moment in Hull’s history at the dawn of the English Civil War – all taking place next to the remains of the Beverley Gate\, the site of the unique stand-off between monarch and Parliament. \nReenactors wearing the clothes of the period will march in the city centre to mark the 375th anniversary of Hotham’s defiance\, bringing the sights and sounds of a 17th Century army on the march\, with a special performance at the Beverley Gate to commemorate the occasion.

SUMMARY:Catton Hall\, South Derbyshire
DESCRIPTION:This August Bank Holiday weekend\, The Sealed Knot comes to Catton Hall for a spectacular weekend of historical reenactment and entertainment. \nLet us take you back to the year of 1642 when our staunch Royalists are attacked by Parliament forces all in the name of democracy.  Cromwell has sacked the High Sherriff of Derbyshire due to his allegiance to Charles 1 and the power to rule is finely balanced. \nSome fact\, some fiction but an experience not to be missed as the roar of Cannons reverberates across the battlefield\, Lord Generals deploy their troops and the mighty battle flows to and fro.\nWho will win\, who will lose\, who will die\, who will survive the answer to these questions can only be found at this Spectacular event by the largest re-enactment Society in Europe. \nThe battle alone is entertaining but to add to your enjoyment we have an ‘authentic’ Living History Camp where members of the Society will be demonstrating trades and crafts of the period and character actors will be making Cameo appearances.  The Kings Entourage is just one of these Cameo performances to keep you entertained. \nWe open at 11am both Sunday 28th and Monday 29th August with a full programme each day to entertain you along with a Beer Tent and other attractions.

SUMMARY:Tattershall Castle
DESCRIPTION:Let us take you back to 1643 with The Sealed Knot who will have a large ‘authentic’ camp overlooking the Castle grounds\, with period cooking\, games\, story-telling\, arms and artefacts on display where our Members will only be too happy to talk and answer questions. \nDuring the Skirmish musketeers will be firing from the castle roof and opposing guns firing over the battle field in front of the castle\, where on day one an advance party of the Marquis of Newcastle’s troops attack the castle\, but are repulsed by the Parliament garrison.  On day two\, with more soldiers the Royalist attack succeeds. \nThis is certainly educational wrapped up in entertainment and something people of all ages will enjoy.

SUMMARY:The Siege Of Sheffield
DESCRIPTION:This Father’s Day weekend\, take the whole family to Sheffield to witness the stout Royalist defence against Parliamentarian bombardment! \nOn 18-19 June at Sheffield Works Department Sports & Social Club (Heeley Bank Road\, Sheffield\, S2 3GL)\, the Sealed Knot will reenact a skirmish from the English Civil War as the forces sent by the Parliamentarian general The Earl of Manchester take on the garrison left by the King’s general in the north\, the Earl of Newcastle. Who will win and decide the fate of the town? \nThe opening of the fascinating Living History encampment will be announced at 11am with the firing of a cannon\, beginning the displays of arms and armour throughout the day. \nAt 2.30pm\, the attacking Parliamentarian army will march out with cannon and demand the surrender of the city’s Royalist garrison – but they will not be cowed and sally forth to take on the Roundheads! \nOn 11 October 1642\, as England moved towards civil war\, Sheffield and its castle was seized by Sir John Gell for the Parliamentarians but in spring the following year the Royalist forces led by the Earl of Newcastle entered Yorkshire and took Leeds\, Wakefield\, and Rotherham before approaching Sheffield. The town’s Parliamentary defenders of fled into Derbyshire allowing the Royalists to take the castle without a fight. Newcastle garrisoned the castle and held it until August 1644 when the Earl of Manchester sent Major-General Crawford and Colonel Pickering\, a force of 1\,200 soldiers to recapture Sheffield for the Parliamentarians. At first the castle resisted but when Parliament brought up larger cannon they opened a breach the castle wall\, after which terms for the surrender were agreed.

SUMMARY:Newark
DESCRIPTION:The Sealed Knot returns to the impressive Queen’s Sconce in Newark-on-Trent to relive the town’s pivotal role in the English Civil War\, offering a chance to experience at first hand the horrors of a nation at war with itself as well as providing a glimpse of everyday life. \nFrom displays of civilian life from the mid-17th Century to arms drill and musket firing\, we will be bringing this original English Civil War fortification to life – plus our troops will reenact a skirmish each day! \nThe Living History Camp is open from 1pm to 4.30pm each day\, and the skirmishes will take place in the early afternoon. \nThe Queen’s Sconce is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and one of the country’s finest remaining earthworks from the English Civil Wars (1642-51). It is distinctively star-shaped when viewed from the air and is one of nine siege works remaining in a recognisable state in and around Newark. It’s considered an internationally important heritage feature\, and is surrounded by open space and playing fields. \nWhy not combine your trip with a visit to the brilliant National Civil War Centre in town? You should also try the impressive Civil War Trail\, with the app that uses ‘augmented reality technology’ to recall episodes from Newark’s pivotal role in the 17th century British Civil Wars. To download the app go to the App Store or Android Google Play.
