SUMMARY:Basing House
DESCRIPTION:Bank Holiday Monday 13 April; Basing House\, Basingstoke THIS EVENT HAS NOW BEEN CANCELLED IN RESPONSE  TO THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS. \nBasing House was one of the iconic sieges of the English Civil Wars. Basing was the home of the Marquis of Winchester\, a supporter of King Charles I. Parliamentary forces made three attempts to take Basing House\, with first two sieges being broken before it fell at the third attempt. \nAs a prelude to our Major Battle experience on the late May Bank Holiday this year\, this Easter Bank Holiday Monday you’ll be able to see a smaller scale battle as the defences are put to the test. \nThe troops will cross from Barton Mill\, fight their way through the Great Barn\, before giving battle in the grounds of the house itself. \nSet against the evocative backdrop of the ruins of the House\, our living history camp will provide an ‘up-close’ experience of aspects of military and civilian life. \nFor details on entrance prices\, parking and directions go to the Basing House website – link

SUMMARY:Huntingdon March & Cromwell Museum Re-opening
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Sealed Knot will be marching from the neighbouring town of Godmanchester\, over the main 14th Century Old Bridge\, down Huntingdon High Street\, and finish in the market square in front of the museum. \nThe parade will begin at Bridge Place (PE29 2AB) at 1.30pm and arrive in Huntingdon in time for the Opening Ceremony\, attended by dignitaries\, at 2pm. \nThis unique event\, staged by Colonel John Pickering’s Regiment of Foote\, celebrates the grand reopening of the Cromwell Museum \nAfter the ceremony\, the museum will then be open for the public and there will be further historical cameos in the afternoon. \nClosed since October 2019\, the Cromwell Museum is dedicated to explaining and understanding this pivotal and controversial figure in British history\, and work on the new state-of-the-art facility is nearing completion in the former Huntingdon Grammar School building\, which was where Oliver Cromwell was educated as a schoolboy. \nIf you really want to immerse yourself in the civil war history visit Huntingdon Castle hill in the town. The castle itself was demolished back in the medieval period\, but the site was used as artillery battery to control the crossing over the Great River Ouse. Huntingdon was a Parliament stronghold although it was briefly occupied and plundered by Royalist forces following their defeat at the battle of Naseby in 1645. Charles I set up court at the George Inn. \nFor more information about the museum and its £160\,000 refurbishment.
