SUMMARY:Newent Onion Festival
DESCRIPTION:Newent Onion Fayre\nDates: 13-14 September\nLocation: High Street\, Newent GL18 1AN\n\nFrom onion eating to parading pooches\, the annual Newent Onion Fayre is an event like no other! The Earl of Manchester’s Regiment of Foote is proud to be a part of this revitalised traditional festival\, celebrating the humble onion! \nBrining thousands to this quiet corner of Gloucestershire\, the Onion Fayre began in the 13th century under the seal of King Henry III. Cancelled due to the covid pandemic\, the Fayre is now back and our English Civil War soldiers will help bring a little 17th Century fun to proceedings. \nA great day out for all the family\, the Newent Onion Fayre is the home of the world-famous onion eating competition\, which sees competitors test the strength of their stomachs as they race to consume an entire raw onion. Plus\, there will be activities galore\, with live music\, street entertainment\, fairground rides\, market stalls selling local produce\, and much more! \nWeekend schedule\nOpening times both days: 10am-4.30pm\nSaturday: Onion Fayre\, including cameos from the Sealed Knot\nSunday: Living History\, with battle at 1.30pm \nMore details to come… \nThe history\nSat on the front lines of the English Civil War\, Newent was strongly Royalist – it is said that the rector of St Mary’s\, John Wilse\, rode into battle alongside Royalist cavalry\, armed with a pistol in each hand! \nIt was under Sir William Vavasour that Newent had its largest role. The younger son of an important Yorkshire gentleman\, Vavasour was captured at Edgehill in 1642 but escaped and arrived at the King’s capital of Oxford to a hero’s welcome. Mustering a local 2\,600-strong force at Hereford and marching on Tewkesbury in 1644\, Vavasour’s army was bolstered by English troops brought over from suppressing the Irish Rebellion. He marched to Newent\, garrisoning the town with Colonel Mynne’s infantry\, while he established more garrisons at nearby Highnam and Taynton. \nVavasour was given the task of blockading the Parliamentarian stronghold of Gloucester and securing the county to provide troops and money for the King. This he did successfully until the Royalist defeat at Cheriton in March 1644 meant Vavasour’s force had to march away to reinforce the King’s main field army. This left the county open and in mid-April Gloucester’s governor\, Colonel Edward Massey\, sallied out and attacked Mynne at Newent. The attack was repulsed\, but Mynne was ordered to withdraw to Ross-on-Wye to protect Herefordshire while Vavasour tried to raise a new local army.

SUMMARY:Royal Revenge: The Trial of the Regicides
DESCRIPTION:1:00 PM – 4:30 PM \nBook tickets \nAdmission: £15 adults\, £10 museum members/full time students/under 18s \nLocation: Huntington Town Hall \nColonel John Pickerings Regiment of foote\, (and friends from other Regiments of the Sealed Knot) working with our sponsor The Cromwell Museum\, once again brings you an immersive performance with an interpretation of real events. \nOur very first attempt at ‘Theatre’ 6 years ago recreated the Trail of Charles 1st – which we have performed 3 times – but this time we turn things on its head\, and characters from history who you would have originally seen as the King’s Judges are now the ones on Trial for their lives. \nFollowing the death of Oliver Cromwell and the restoration of the Monarchy under Charles 2nd the new King has issued ‘The Act of Oblivion’ stating all is forgiven for the horror of the Civil wars unless you were part of the Trial and execution of his late father. \nWe’re reconstructing these events from original trial records\, allowing you to experience them in an immersive way – other than a narrator\, YOU will be part of the audience to events in 1660 in the atmospheric surroundings of an historic courtroom. \nPerformances take place at 1pm\, 3.30pm and 6.30pm on Saturday 7 February; 10am\, 12.30pm and 3pm on Sunday 8 February 2026. \nBooking essential. Not suitable for children under 10. Performances last 90 minutes. \nBook tickets

SUMMARY:Coleford Parade
DESCRIPTION:Battle of Coleford 1643 Memorial Parade \nThis is an annual event\, the first of which took place in February 2010 when a Commemorative Plaque presented by The Sealed Knot was unveiled in the Market Place. \nThe event commemorates the Battle of Coleford which took place on 20th February 1643 when a Royalist Army of 2\,000 soldiers\, including 500 cavalry\, arrived in the town which was defended by a Parliamentary militia consisting of local men who were responsible for defending local communities. \nThe Royalist Army had been commanded to lay siege to Gloucester but also to divert to Coleford to destroy the local militia that was commanded by Colonel John Berrow.  It has to be said that\, but for a handful of experienced officers\, the soldiers had seen little or no action in battle. \nEarly in the battle the Commanding Officer\, General Sir Richard Lawdley and his Second in Command\, Captain Burke were shot dead.  The Royalsit Army were left with few experienced leaders and the battle lasted approximately two hours during which the streets and lanes of Coleford were said to run with blood. \nEventually the local men escaped into the forest and the Royalist Army made their way to Highnam near Gloucester where they were destroyed by Waller’s cavalry some two weeks later. \nEvent Timings \nSaturday\, 21st February 2026:  At 11.00am soldiers will begin to muster in Mushet Walk ready to march off at approximately 11.25am. \nThe parade will be centred on the Market Place during which there will be tributes to the fallen and the reading of the poem “Battle of Coleford” written many years ago by the local poet Keith Morgan.  The poem will be read by local students. \nThere will follow a display of both pike and musket. \nMembers of the public will have an opportunity to speak with Sealed Knot members. \nAugust 2026 Event \nA large event is being organised for 8th / 9th August 2026\, sponsored by Coleford Town Council.  It will include a re-enactment of the battle in the town on the Saturday and a battle on Angus Buchanan VC Recreation Grounds on the Sunday where there will also be a living history village. \nThere is time to get involved\, learn some soldiering skill\, join up and take part in the August event.  Make yourself known at the Memorial Parade and you will be put in touch with local members.
