SUMMARY:Pontefract Castle
DESCRIPTION:During the Civil War\, Pontefract Castle was the site of no less than three bitter sieges. At the start of the second war\, John Morris\, and a few of his supporters\, snuck into the castle by pretending to bring in beds for the garrison. These Royalists then held the castle for nine months. However\, when the King was executed they had to surrender and Morris was executed for treason. \nThis June\, step back in time to the bloody 17th century\, and find out what life was like during that turbulent\, tumultuous time: brother against brother\, neighbour against neighbour – and a castle under attack! \nThe Earl of Manchesters Regiment of Foote will bring the experience of being besieged vividly to life. Be amazed by their explosive gun displays\, and marvel at the mighty siege engines. \nThis event is FREE\, and there is no need to book. Just come along and join in the fun! \nThink you’d make a fine Civil War soldier? Then you and your family can put yourselves to the test with our climbing wall – will you make it to the top? \nPontefract Castle – link

SUMMARY:Wentworth Woodhouse

It stands in 87 acres of gardens and grounds and has extensive views over former parkland\, including a deer park and lakes\, which are vested in the Fitzwilliam Wentworth Amenity Trust. \nHistorically it is significant for a number of reasons; however\, important to the Sealed Knot as it was the home of Charles I’s advisor and friend Thomas Wentworth\, 1st Earl Of Strafford\, whose execution at the behest of Parliament was a major factor in the build up to the outbreak of the Civil Wars. It was in the House’s Yellow Bedroom that Thomas learnt of his fate. He was executed on Tower Hill in London in May 1641. \nTake a more hands-on approach to history by seeing us in costume\, asking questions and handle some of our weapons and equipment. SUMMARY:The Siege Of Basing House
DESCRIPTION:Basing House was one of the iconic sieges of the English Civil Wars. Basing was the home of the Marquis of Winchester\, a supporter of King Charles I. Parliamentary forces made three attempts to take Basing House\, with first two sieges being broken before it fell at the third attempt. \nThis Easter Bank Holiday experience the second of our 375th anniversary Basing House events presented by Col Stephen Hawkins Regiment. \nIt’s late summer of 1644\, following the ill-fated attack on Odiham the Basing garrison have been pursued by Colonel Richard Norton back to Basing House. The garrison now reduced to 175 men with little food and ammunition dangerously low. Norton’s men\, mortars and heavy artillery are once again besieging Basing House. With powerful Parliamentary garrisons in Abingdon\, Reading and Newbury and the Kings army in the west\, Basing was unlikely to be rescued. \nThe only hope is Colonel Gage’s relief column sent from Oxford which will have to covertly make the journey to Basing and defeat Norton’s troops to resupply the Garrison so enabling them to hold out until rescue by the Kings armies. \nSet against the evocative backdrop of the ruins of the House\, our living history camp (open Saturday\, Sunday\, Monday) provides an ‘up-close’ experience of aspects of military and civilian life during this turbulent period in our nation’s history. \nThen on Sunday and Monday at around 2.00pm experience the sight and sound of the battle to take Basing House! \nBook tickets to see this event here. \nBasing House – link
