Broughton Castle, Fete

June 10, 2017

From 2.00pm on Saturday 10th June 2017, Lord and Lady Saye and Sele will be hosting the Broughton Fete in the castle grounds.

The Lord Saye and Sele’s Blew Regiment of Foote and other units of the Sealed Knot are proud to be supporting the event and commemorating some of the events of 1642 there with a Living History Camp, Display of Arms and a Skirmish.

Broughton Castle is a moated and fortified manor house near Banbury in North Oxfordshire and is home to the 21st Lord and Lady Saye & Sele, whose family name is Fiennes and the ownership of the Castle has remained in the same family since 1447.

William Fiennes, 8th Baron Saye and Sele, was a leading supporter of the Parliamentarian cause and Broughton Castle became a centre of opposition to Charles I.     When the Civil War broke out, he raised a blue coated regiment of infantry and 3 troops of cavalry to join the fight against the King.

The castle was besieged and damaged after the Battle of Edgehill in 1642. Some of this damage can be seen today..
